Yields Near 19-Year High, Nvidia's $150B Buyback and AMD's $8.2B AI Deal: What's Going On Today

Tuesday, 29 September 2026. Bond yields near a 19-year high, oil above $90 and a wave of big AI deals are shaping markets today. Here is what is going on, verified across multiple sources.

Markets: yields keep the pressure on

US stocks slipped on Monday, with the Dow falling more than 300 points, the S&P 500 down 0.8% and the Nasdaq down 0.9%, according to CNBC. Bloomberg notes the S&P 500 erased its gains for the month in that session.

The 10-year Treasury yield briefly hit 5.274% on Monday, its highest level since 2007, and was trading around 5.24% on Tuesday morning. The 30-year yield hovered near 5.55%, close to a 2004 high (CNBC). Futures were broadly flat to slightly higher ahead of the open, with investors watching US consumer confidence and JOLTS job openings data due today.

Oil remains elevated: Brent for November delivery traded around $106 a barrel and WTI around $92-93, as traders weighed resumed flows through a key Saudi pipeline against a lack of progress in US-Iran talks (Bloomberg, CNBC). Gold rose about 0.5% to roughly $4,191 (Yahoo Finance/Zacks).

In London, the FTSE 100 was up about 0.3% in early trade and the Stoxx Europe 600 gained nearly 0.4% (CNBC).

Central banks and inflation

  • The Reserve Bank of Australia raised its cash rate 25 basis points to 4.6%, a 15-year high and its fourth hike of 2026 (CNBC).
  • Spain's annual inflation rose to 4.9% in September, above the 4.6% economists expected and the highest since early 2023 (CNBC).

Tech: the AI deal machine rolls on

Nvidia authorised a record $150 billion increase to its share buyback, lifting its total remaining authorisation to $235 billion and eclipsing Apple's $110 billion approval in 2024 (Reuters, Yahoo Finance). Shares rose about 1.7% pre-market.

AMD agreed to acquire World Labs, the San Francisco AI lab founded by Fei-Fei Li that builds models for 3D environments, in an $8.2 billion all-stock deal (CNBC, Yahoo Finance).

Anthropic's IPO prospectus is drawing attention: CNBC reports roughly 80 of its 261 pages are devoted to AI risks, including behaviours such as models resisting shutdown. The company first filed confidentially with the SEC in June.

Company movers

  • Boeing (BA) fell 6.9% after the FAA delayed certification of the 737 MAX 10 over a newly found software glitch affecting automated flight guidance in a specific landing scenario (Reuters, Zacks).
  • Summit Therapeutics jumped almost 20% after hours on a $2 billion AstraZeneca investment at $18.36 a share (CNBC).
  • Shein's Q2 adjusted net income fell 66.6% to $228 million on revenue of $11.1 billion (CNBC).
  • Newmont (NEM) slid 4.4% as precious metals fell on soaring yields, and United Airlines (UAL) dropped 2.2% on higher oil (Zacks).

What to watch

Carnival reports earnings today, followed by Micron and Conagra on 30 September and Nike on 1 October. With the 10-year yield hovering above 5.2%, rate-sensitive tech stocks remain the market's pressure point.
