BP (BP): Net debt hits 2027 target a year early

BP says Q3 net debt is about $13.5-14.5bn, down from $22.3bn in Q2 and already inside its $14-18bn end-2027 target. Refining margins ($46.7/bbl vs $29.6) did much of the work, but $3-4.5bn of impairments are coming too.
Why it matters Debt was the constraint on BP's payouts: buybacks are paused and the new CEO has called BP the most levered major in over a decade. A balance sheet at target early gives room to reset strategy, with an update due Dec 15, but high oil prices and the Gelsenkirchen sale helped, and impairments in the gas and low-carbon unit offset some of the good news.
What we verified BP's Oct 13, 2026 trading statement (Form 6-K) and Bloomberg both report Q3 net debt of roughly $13.5-14.5bn, versus $22.3bn at end-Q2. BP's filing gives a refining indicator margin of $46.7/bbl and $3.0-4.5bn of impairments. Full Q3 results are due Oct 30. Share price moves differed by source, so we leave them out.
