OpenAI Eyes $30bn at a $1.4tn Valuation as It Delays Its IPO
Tuesday, 29 September 2026. On the same day it showed off Dots, OpenAI was reported to be lining up one of the biggest private funding rounds ever, and pushing back its stock market debut. Its DevDay recap also filled in the details on faster models and cloud coding. Here is what is going on.
OpenAI seeks $30bn at a $1.4tn valuation
OpenAI is targeting at least $30 billion in a new funding round at a $1.4 trillion pre-money valuation, Bloomberg News reported, citing people familiar with the matter. Reuters and Yahoo Finance carried the report (Investing.com, Yahoo Finance).
- The round is structured as a bridge that gives OpenAI more capital in place of an IPO.
- Chief executive Sam Altman has said a listing this year would be 'ill-advised', and the float is now not expected before 2027.
- OpenAI has not publicly confirmed the terms.
DevDay: faster models and Codex in the cloud
OpenAI's official DevDay recap lists more than 20 announcements (OpenAI, CNBC). Beyond Dots and the $500 Pro plan, the key ones for developers are:
- GPT-6.1 Sol: an upgrade aimed at agentic coding, computer use and professional work, offering what OpenAI calls 'near-Astra intelligence' at one-fifth of GPT-6 Astra's standard token prices. It is available on the API and on Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu plans.
- Ultrafast: a premium speed tier offering up to 8x faster token generation in Codex, at 300 tokens per second, and up to 6x faster in the API. GPT-6 Astra Ultrafast is live for Pro 500 and Enterprise customers; a Sol version is coming soon.
- Codex in the cloud: developers can run Codex on their computer, from their phone or in the cloud, so tasks keep running when the laptop is closed.
- A refreshed Codex CLI with voice control and a new /agents view to track multiple tasks, plus a new code review experience in the ChatGPT desktop app.
- Private Intelligence: zero data retention with automated safety reviews that OpenAI staff cannot see, with a Private Inference preview coming this autumn.
