Anthropic's $518 Billion Compute Bill and the White House's New AI Chatbot
Tuesday, 29 September 2026. Anthropic's IPO filing has revealed just how much it has promised to spend on computing power, and most of it cannot be cancelled. Meanwhile, the White House has launched an AI chatbot meant to replace a maze of government websites, and it ran into trouble almost immediately. Here is what is going on in tech.
Anthropic's $518 billion compute bill
Anthropic plans to spend at least $518 billion on AI infrastructure over the next decade, and about 80% of those commitments are non-cancellable or payable regardless of usage, according to its confidential IPO prospectus seen by Reuters (Reuters, Yahoo Finance).
- Google: at least $111.1 billion, payable between April 2026 and July 2033. 'If our actual spend falls short, we must pay Google the difference,' the filing says.
- Amazon: $110 billion, between May 2026 and April 2036, on similar terms.
- Microsoft: $31.4 billion, from November 2026 to May 2033, non-cancellable except for an uncured material breach by Microsoft.
- Broadcom-related equipment leases: about $161.2 billion. Agreements with xAI could add up to $84.5 billion.
- AMD is expected to supply more than $20 billion of computing capacity, and Anthropic has committed to buy up to $5 billion of AMD stock.
For scale, Anthropic's revenue was about $4.59 billion in 2025, and The Globe and Mail reports it made a net loss of $42 billion that year.
America.gov: the government's new AI front door
The White House launched America.gov on Tuesday, an AI chatbot designed to help people find information and services across federal websites (AP, CNBC, The Verge).
- It searches roughly 29,000 government websites and answers using only official sources, according to US Chief Design Officer and Airbnb co-founder Joe Gebbia (CNBC).
- Gebbia told CNBC it is powered by Google's Gemini and xAI's Grok.
- It is free, has no ads and needs no login, and the White House says it will not store or collect users' data (AP, The Verge).
- Passport applications, Medicare enrolment and federal job searches are due to be added in 2027 (The Verge).
- AP reported that the chatbot initially gave answers contradicting several of President Trump's characteristic claims, then began changing its answers within moments of launch.
