A gas explosion at Intel's Kiryat Gat chip plant in Israel on 14 October killed two workers and seriously injured a third. Intel has said it is cooperating with investigators but has not said whether chip output is affected. It reports third-quarter results on 29 October.

## What happened

On Wednesday 14 October 2026, Israel's fire service received a report at 2:12 pm of thick black smoke and an explosion at Intel's factory in Kiryat Gat, in southern Israel, known as Fab 28. Three workers were taken to hospital with severe burns. One died hours later and a second died on Thursday 15 October, according to the Soroka Medical Center as reported by The Times of Israel; the third, a man in his 20s, remained in serious condition, sedated and on a ventilator. Police said a gas cylinder explosion was suspected, and fire officials said the gas involved was nitrogen trifluoride, a colourless gas that does not burn but helps other things burn and is toxic to inhale. The city's mayor said there was no danger to the public, and there was no sign of an attack. Intel said it was "deeply saddened by the loss of two workers" and is cooperating with the authorities.

## The numbers, explained

No company figure for this event exists yet: Intel has not disclosed any damage, lost output or cost, and the cause is still under investigation. The one market number is the share price. One market-news site reports that Intel closed at $95.37 on Thursday 15 October, down $2.75 from $98.12, which is a fall of 2.8% (2.75 divided by 98.12), on a day the Nasdaq index rose 0.08%. That site attributes the drop partly to the explosion and partly to a wider chip-stock fall after high US inflation data; no source separates the two, so we do not either. This is a secondary source and we could not confirm the closing prices in a second one.

To judge how much the plant could matter, start from Intel's last reported quarter (the three months to 27 June 2026, from its SEC filing). Sales were $16.1bn ($16,128m), up 25% from $12.9bn a year earlier. The share of sales left after the direct cost of making products (gross margin, on the standard accounting basis called GAAP) was 40.4%, against 27.5%, a gain of 12.9 percentage points. Profit per share excluding some items (non-GAAP) was $0.42 against a $0.10 loss. The reported loss was $11.0bn, or $2.16 a share, mostly because of a $12.5bn accounting charge linked to shares held back for the US Commerce Department under a government chip-funding agreement, not because the business lost that much trading. Cash generated by operations was $7.0bn.

## Why it matters

Intel designs chips and also makes them, for itself and, through its Intel Foundry arm, for other companies. That arm had sales of $5.8bn in the quarter, up 31% from a year earlier (so roughly $4.4bn then, our working: 5.8 divided by 1.31), and an operating loss of $2.1bn, narrower than the $3.2bn loss a year before. A fab (chip factory) is expensive to run and sensitive to any interruption, which is why a serious incident at one site draws attention. Intel's filing lists "tensions and conflict affecting Israel and the Middle East" among its general risk factors, but it does not say how much of its output comes from Israel, and we have not found a primary figure, so we cannot say how large this plant's share is. JPost describes Fab 28 as making chips used in Intel's processors and calls it a key Israeli site.

The human cost comes first, and any business effect is separate and unknown. Chip factories use hazardous gases under tight controls, so regulators and the company will examine what failed. For customers and rivals the question is practical: whether Intel has to move work between sites, how long that takes, and whether it changes what it can ship in the current quarter. Intel's own forecast for this quarter was issued in July, before the blast.

## What to watch next

Intel reports third-quarter results after the market closes on Thursday 29 October 2026, the first scheduled occasion to say whether the explosion affected production or costs. Its own forecast from July (the company's view, not an outcome) was sales of $15.8bn to $16.8bn, a midpoint of $16.3bn about 1% above last quarter's $16.1bn, with a gross margin of 41.0% on the GAAP basis (42.0% excluding some items) and profit per share of $0.31 GAAP and $0.38 excluding items. Also to watch are the findings of the Israeli police and fire-service investigations into the cause, and any update on the condition of the injured worker. We make no prediction about any of these.

> **Why it matters** Intel is one of the world's biggest chipmakers, and a fatal accident at one of its factories raises questions about safety and about whether output could be disrupted. So far Intel has not said it is.

> **What we verified** Incident (14 Oct, two deaths, one seriously injured, suspected gas cylinder, nitrogen trifluoride) confirmed by The Times of Israel, JPost and Ynet; Intel's statement quoted by The Times of Israel. Q2 figures (sales $16,128m, GAAP gross margin 40.4%, non-GAAP EPS $0.42, GAAP loss $11.0bn, Q3 forecast) read in Intel's SEC 8-K and the same release on Intel's site. Share price from Gotrade only; production impact is undisclosed.
