CoreWeave, which rents out computing power for artificial intelligence, saw its shares fall roughly 15% to 16% on 14 October after investors demanded a record return to hold one of its bonds. The move puts its borrowing costs in focus: in the June quarter, interest expense of $640M was five times its adjusted operating income of $128M.

## What happened

CoreWeave runs data centers full of specialised chips and rents that computing power to companies building AI. On Tuesday 13 October, the yield on its $1.25 billion of 9.625% senior unsecured bonds due July 2032 reached nearly 15% during the day and closed at a record 14.5%, according to Investing.com. A bond's yield is the annual return an investor earns if they buy at today's price and hold to maturity. When the yield climbs, the bond's price has fallen, which means lenders are asking for more compensation for the risk. CoreWeave sold these bonds at par (face value) in June 2026, with the 9.625% coupon, the fixed interest rate on the bond, equal to the yield at issue. The yield is now about 4.9 percentage points higher (14.5% less 9.625%).

The shares fell the next day. Investing.com reported a drop of 15.1% in morning trading, with the stock at about $65.78, against a 52-week high of $150.40. By our working, $65.78 divided by $150.40 is 0.437, so the shares sat about 56% below that high. Yahoo Finance, quoting an earlier moment, had the fall at about 10%, and another outlet put the low point at up to 16%, so we describe the move as roughly 15% to 16% rather than a single figure. Nebius, a rival that also rents out AI computing, fell about 6% in the Yahoo report and Oracle also declined, though outlets differ on the size of those moves. Investing.com says Elon Musk replied "Yikes" to a post about the yields, which added to the attention.

## The numbers, explained

The figures that frame the worry come from CoreWeave's own results for the quarter to 30 June 2026, released on 11 August. Sales were $2,575M against $1,212M a year earlier: $1,363M more, or 112.5% growth. Adjusted EBITDA, a profit measure before interest, tax and depreciation, was $1,510M against $753M, up 100.5%. But those costs left out of adjusted EBITDA are large for this business. The net loss under standard accounting (GAAP) was $626M against $290M a year earlier, a loss 115.9% larger. Interest expense, net, was $640M against $267M, up 139.7%. Adjusted operating income, profit from running the business after most costs, was $128M against $200M, down 36.0%. Our working: $640M of interest divided by $128M of adjusted operating income is 5.0, so interest was five times that profit.

Spending is the other side. CoreWeave's cash spent on property and equipment, including capitalised internal-use software, was $6,422M in the quarter against $2,453M a year earlier, up 161.8%. To fund it, the company says it raised more than $10 billion of unsecured debt and convertible bonds (bonds that can turn into shares) and a $3.1 billion term loan; net proceeds from debt issuance were $13,457M. At 30 June it held $5,524M in cash and equivalents, or $6,904M including restricted cash. Its revenue backlog, contracted sales not yet delivered, was about $104 billion, and it said it added more than $25 billion of new commitments early in the third quarter, which that figure excludes. Outlets put total debt and lease obligations at about $52 billion; we could not confirm that in the release, so treat it as reported by Investing.com and CryptoBriefing, not by CoreWeave.

## Why it matters

CoreWeave makes money by signing multi-year contracts with AI customers, buying chips and building data center space to serve them, and charging for the computing power. Because it pays for this largely with borrowed money, its profit depends on the gap between what contracts earn and what the debt costs. The release shows that gap is thin for now: adjusted operating income of $128M against $640M of interest. The backlog suggests sales are contracted, but turning backlog into sales requires power, equipment and construction on time. The company has said it is confident its backlog supports its debt, as one outlet reported; we did not find that statement in a document we read, so we do not rely on it.

For the wider sector, the bond is a market signal rather than a result. A yield near 15% means lenders see more risk than they did in June, and other AI-computing firms that borrow in the same market, such as Nebius and Oracle, moved down alongside it. Analyst Gil Luria of D.A. Davidson, quoted by Investing.com, said CoreWeave borrows at around 9% while earning about 1% on its investments and that the stock "could go to zero if the AI boom cracks." That is an analyst opinion, not a fact, and we report it as such. For customers, nothing in these sources shows any change in service. For rivals, higher borrowing costs would make building new capacity more expensive, though that is our commentary, not a reported outcome.

## What to watch next

CoreWeave's next quarterly results, for the three months to 30 September, will show whether interest costs and spending rose again; we have not found a confirmed date, so check the company's investor relations page. In its August call, as summarised by MarketBeat, management guided to third-quarter sales of $3.45 billion to $3.6 billion and interest expense of $860 million to $940 million; we did not find that guidance in the release itself, so it is unconfirmed by us. A Form 144 notice, which signals a planned insider share sale, was filed on 13 October, according to Investing.com. The $1.25 billion bond matures on 15 July 2032, and its yield will show whether lenders' view changes.

- Key terms in plain words
- Yield: the yearly return a bond buyer earns at today's price; it rises when the price falls.
- Coupon: the fixed interest rate a bond pays on its face value.
- Backlog: sales already contracted but not yet delivered.
- Adjusted EBITDA: profit before interest, tax and depreciation, as the company defines it.

> **Why it matters** A company that rents out AI computing power now has to pay a record price to borrow, and its shares fell about 15% on the day. It shows how much the AI build-out depends on lenders being willing to keep funding it.

> **What we verified** From CoreWeave's 11 Aug 2026 results release: sales $2,575M vs $1,212M, net loss $626M vs $290M, interest $640M vs $267M, adjusted operating income $128M vs $200M, adjusted EBITDA $1,510M vs $753M, cash spent on equipment $6,422M vs $2,453M, backlog about $104B. Bond terms ($1.25B, 9.625%, due 15 July 2032, priced June 2026) are from CoreWeave's pricing release. The 14.5% yield, the 15.1% share fall and the $65.78 price are from Investing.com; Yahoo Finance and CryptoBriefing confirm the direction and the yield, with different intraday moves. Percentages were recomputed by us. The $52B debt figure and Q3 guidance are secondary-source only.
